Τη Δευτέρα 12/12/2022 θα πραγματοποιηθεί το τρίτο σεμινάριο του Δικτύου για την Ιστορία της Υγείας για το ακαδημαϊκό έτος, με ομιλητή τον Marius Turda, καθηγητή Ιστορίας και διευθυντή του Centre for Medical Humanities (Oxford Brookes University, Οξφόρδη) και συζητήτρια την Αλεξάνδρα Μπαρμπούτη (Διδακτόρισα Ιστορίας της Ιατρικής).
Το θέμα της ομιλίας, που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στα Αγγλικά, είναι: «Endocrinology and Rejuvenation in Communist Romania».
Medical sciences in Romania were severely curtailed after 1947, with the country’s transformation into a satellite state of the Soviet Union in 1947 and the adoption of Soviet scientific theories. Yet, due to the political influence of endocrinologist C. I. Parhon (president of the National Assembly in the newly established Romanian People’s Republic), areas of scientific research dealing with human biology, otherwise considered “Morganist” (after T. H. Morgan) and “racist”, survived. These included a wide range of theories of biotypological improvement, which placed emphasis on glandular rejuvenation, endocrine therapies and the study of longevity. In the following decade, Parhon and his disciples managed to continue research on the human body (constitution), primarily from an endocrinological point of view and with a special focus on aging and chronic degenerative diseases. When, in 1952, the Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics was established, Ana Aslan, one of Parhon’s students and at the time working at Parhon’s Institute of Endocrinology, was appointed director. In the 1960s and 1970s, Aslan’s research on rejuvenation (including the development of treatment with Gerovital H3) became Romania’s most successful scientific project and a source of political (and ideological) accomplishment for the state. Many political dignitaries, as well members of the general public, in Romania (and elsewhere) benefited from Aslan’s treatments of rejuvenation. It seemed that (some) people were, indeed, living longer under communism.
