Broadcasting health and disease. Bodies, markets and television, 1950s-1980s

Throughout the age of television health and body-related subjects have been presented and diffused into the public sphere via a multitude of forms, ranging from short films in health education programmes to school television, from professional training to TV ads, from documentary and reality TV shows to TV news, but also as complementary VHS and similar video formats circulating in private and public spheres. From live transmission of daunting surgical operations or accounts of medication scandals in the 1950s and 1960s to participatory aerobic workouts or militant AIDS documentaries, bodies and health on television and more genuinely the interrelationship of the history of health and bodies and the history of the various TV formats has not been extensively researched. Our assumption is that such audio-visuals are not conceived merely as a mirror or expression of what is observed, but that visuals should be regarded as a distinct, interactive performative power of mass media societies.

European Network in Universal and Global History (ENIUGH)

 

 Αναφορά συνεδρίου

Με αφορμή τα 100 χρόνια από τη Ρωσική Επανάσταση, το European Network in Universal and Global History (ENIUGH)* διοργάνωσε το πέμπτο ευρωπαϊκό συνέδριο για την παγκόσμια ιστορία με γενικό τίτλο «Ρήξεις, Αυτοκρατορίες, Επαναστάσεις (Ruptures, Empires, Revolutions)» στη Βουδαπέστη. Το συνέδριο διήρκησε τέσσερεις ημέρες, από 31 Αυγούστου μέχρι 3 Σεπτεμβρίου 2017, και φιλοξενήθηκε από τα Corvinus University of Budapest και Central European University.

Το πρόγραμμα των πάνελ ήταν δομημένο σε 14 ενότητες ανάμεσα στις οποίες ξεχωρίσαμε την ενότητα Άνθρωποι, Εργασία και Δημογραφία (People, Labor and Demography). Στα πλαίσια αυτής της ενότητας συγκροτήθηκαν 11 πάνελ με τη συμμετοχή πολλών καθηγητών και ερευνητών από την Ευρώπη και αλλού. Σε σχέση με την ιστορία της υγείας δημιουργήθηκε ένα πάνελ με θέμα την ευγονική και τίτλο: «Eugenics in the making: Examples from the history of eugenics in East and Central Europe». Ο συντονιστής ήταν ο Marius Turda ο οποίος τόνισε την ανάγκη της επικοινωνίας των ιστορικών της υγείας που ασχολούνται με την ιστορία της ευγονικής, η οποία συνδέθηκε πολλές φορές με την εθνική και κοινωνική συγκρότηση των κρατών της Ανατολικής και Κεντρικής Ευρώπης, γεγονός που αναφέρθηκε από όλους τους ομιλητές.

CfP International Conference "Thinking Sex after the Great War"

The last few decades, the multifaceted relations between gender and the First World War have been explored in various historical studies. Historians have analysed the role of gender in the run-up to the outbreak of the war and in the war propaganda, they have depicted the gendered experience of the war by soldiers and civilians, and probed the ways in which the war challenged and blurred existing gender roles. Yet they have also described how the war in the end often seemed to reinforce gender stereotypes. Throughout this rich literature, the question of the impact of the war on gender relations often resurfaces, although most scholars seem to agree that a definitive and general answer on the ‘net result’ of the war in terms of increasing or decreasing equality, is hard to reach and probably beside the point.
            The organizers of this conference invite historians to reflect on the impact of the Great War on gender from the specific angle of learned discourses. Intellectuals, philosophers, social scientists, physiologists, psychologists and scientists witnessed and experienced the war personally. Some of them were integrated in the military war machine (either as ‘common’ soldiers, officers or experts) and were relocated, while others stayed at home and continued their jobs, or registered themselves as ‘conscientious objectors’ and explicitly opposed the war. Like other citizens, they lost family members and friends, experienced love and desire, excitement and disillusionment, enthusiasm and indignation. These experiences inevitably impacted upon their view of society, human nature and the role of the sexes and sexuality. The conference will focus on the trajectories and experiences of intellectuals before, during and after the war, and how the war reinforced, challenged or changed research agendas, paradigms and knowledge about gender and sexuality.

«Τα Πανεπιστημιακά Μουσεία ανοικτά στο κοινό»

(11:00 π.μ. έως τις 3:00 μ.μ.)

Το Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών στο πλαίσιο του επετειακού εορτασμού των 180 χρόνων λειτουργίας του, μετά την επιτυχή και με μεγάλη επισκεψιμότητα Ημέρα των Μουσείων του Ιδρύματος στις 6 Μαΐου 2017, ανοίγει και πάλι στο ευρύ κοινό τα Πανεπιστημιακά Μουσεία.

Το Σάββατο 7 Οκτωβρίου 2017 τα Πανεπιστημιακά Μουσεία θα είναι ανοικτά για το κοινό από τις 11:00 π.μ. έως τις 3:00 μ.μ., με παράλληλες ανά χρονικά διαστήματα ξεναγήσεις για να γνωρίσει και να ενημερωθεί ο επισκέπτης για τον επιστημονικό και πολιτιστικό πλούτο του Πανεπιστημίου. Οι υπεύθυνοι Καθηγητές και Διευθυντές των Μουσείων καθώς και το προσωπικό τους θα προσφέρουν και πάλι στο ευρύ κοινό την εμπειρία της γνωριμίας του σπάνιου θησαυρού που διαθέτουν τα επί μέρους πανεπιστημιακά τμήματα στις μουσειακές τους συλλογές.
